James Hann graduated from Arizona State University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. The first 8 years of his career, he worked for several different Architectural firms doing primarily commercial work. Since then, he has practiced with his own Architectural firm and specializes in custom residential design. He is currently licensed to practice Architecture in several states.
James Hann Design, AIA was founded in 1988 and specializes in custom residential design. In addition to James Hann, Leo Rosas coordinates the firm’s highly regarded and very detailed construction documents and is assisted by one to three draftsmen.
Over the years, James Hann Design, AIA has designed over 100 custom homes in various communities and States. Many have won Local, National and International Awards for design excellence and quite a few have been published in a variety of local and national publications. In 2018, James Hann Design, AIA was ranked #52 out of the top 100 custom residential Architects in North America by Bond Custom.

Design Philosophy…
Every design firm is different and each has its own organizational philosophy about how best to design a custom home for a client.
Not long after I started my own practice, a client commented to me that he wanted me to design his home for him. He didn’t want me to pass it down to an associate or a project manager – he wanted me to personally design his home for him. I have never forgotten his comment and it has formed the basis for my professional design philosophy. Every project is a unique reflection of an owners’ hopes and dreams and every location has its own set of natural determinants that help guide the design process. I personally design every project specifically to meet an owners’ desires without any stylistic parameters. Every project seems to develop its own personality as we progress through the design process and no two are alike. Because I believe that this is the process that works best for an owner, I can only take on a few major projects a year. Once we start the construction documents phase, I have a team of professionals that assists with that phase, but I’m involved with the project from the initial conceptual design to the completion of construction.
